A small species generally found in or near bodies of fresh water marshes across much of the world, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In Jordan, it habitat Aqaba Bird’s Observatory, Azraq wetlands reserve and some of Dam’s lakes.

Adult birds in summer have short red legs and a short black bill a black neck (often with a pale gray back) and belly, very dark grey back, with a white rump and light grey (almost white) tail. The face is tinged yellowish. The wings, as the name implies, are mainly white. The inner wing is grayish with brown-tipped coverts.

These birds do not dive for fish, but fly slowly over the water to surface-pick items and catch insects in flight. They mainly eat insects and small fish.

طائر ينتمي إلى خطاف البحر. صغير الحجم يتواجد قرب السبخات والمياه الحلوة عبر العالم من أوروبا لأستراليا. في الأردن تتواجد في مرصد طيور العقبة ومحمية الأزرق المائية وبعض بحيرات السدود المنتشرة. ‏

للبالغ أرجل قصيرة حمراء ومنقار أسود قصير وكذلك رقبة وبطن أسودان مع ظهر رمادي غامق مع ذيل أبيض. الوجه منمش بالأصفر وأما الجناحان فأبيضان مع لون رمادي من الداخل.‏  يطير فوق سطح الماء ليتغذى ويلتقط السمك الصغير والحشرات. ‏
