Common Kingfisher

The Common Kingfisher is amongst the most colorful birds and has beautiful brilliant plumage, though, despite its extraordinary colors, sometimes it is difficult to see when it is in dappled shade, and its colors are also not very obvious in flight. Furthermore, its shy nature means that it is not often seen. Its upperparts are bright blue and its underparts a rich chestnut-red. Male and female are generally similar.


This pratincole is 24–28 cm long with a 60–70 cm wingspan. It has short legs, long pointed wings, a long forked tail, and a short bill, which is an adaptation to aerial feeding. The back and head are brown, and the wings are brown with darker flight feathers. The belly is white. The underwings are chestnut, but look dark below. Pratincoles are unusual among waders in that they typically hunt their insect prey on the wing like swallows, although they can also feed on the ground.


Their territories vary with the group size as well the presence of neighboring groups. Groups consist of a reproductive pair and other non-breeding members who may or may not be direct offspring or close relatives. The diet of the babblers includes a variety of invertebrates (mostly arthropods), small vertebrates (lizards, geckos, snakes) and plant material, like nectar, flowers, berries, leaves and seeds.         ''';

مجموعه رائعه من الطيور المميزه والمنتشره بالأردن حتى بالأماكن البعيده عن المياه والمكان المفضل هو غور الأردن على طول قناة الغور الشرقية وفي المزارع التي تسحب مياه نهر الأردن وتخزنها بأحواض كبيره بمائها وسمكها, كما يتواجد بمحمية الأزرق المائيه . مشاهدته وهو يغطس بسرعه مدهشه وخروجه من الماء بسمكه متعة كبيره. يتميز بكبر حجم رأسه ومنقاره بالنسبه لجسده والمنقار طويل مدبب أما أرجله فقصيره. هناك ثلاث أنواع من هذا الطائر بالأردن


‏ النوع الشائع 

يعد هذا النوع من الطيور الغنية بالألوان الرائعه من الأزرق الفيروزي والبرتقالي الذي يتحول إلى بني أو كستنائي حسب الإضاءه والأخضر والأبيض والغريب أن هذه اللألوان تبدو باهته عند تواجد الطير بالظل. هو طائر خجول ولا يختلف الشكل واللون كثيرا ما بين الذكر والأنثى. تصوير هذا الطائر يحتاج لصبر وحظ ومراقبة متواصله وأدوات مناسبه لسرعه غطسه بالماء للصيد.‏

يختلف عن الخواضات الأخرى بتناول طعامه من الحشرات وهو طائر وعن الأرض.‏
