It is a widespread breeder; inhabited stony ground in mountains, particularly cliffs. It nests in crevices or holes in buildings. In Jordan, it habitat forests and areas with trees. 

Both sexes have a bright orangey tail, best seen when flashed open or in flight. Male has slaty-grey plumage on the upperparts, including on the crown, with darker tinge on the wings. Flight feathers are dark grey to blackish with white edges, forming white patch when wings are closed. Rump is red-orange. On the underparts, face, throat and breast are blackish. Belly and flanks are slaty-grey. Lower belly and under tail, feathers are red-orange. Bill, eyes, legs and feet are black. Female smoky grayish overall.

The black redstart is socially monogamous. A male pairs with a female to rear young, guards her against other males, and mates with other females. Feeds on insects in flight; Invertebrates and berries, grasshoppers, earwigs, bugs, cockroaches.

طائر مهاجر شتوي وربيعي فقط أي يمكن رؤيته في الشتاء والربيع من فصيلة خاطفات الذباب، يتواجد في الأماكن المظللة مثل الحدائق وحول التلال والبساتين حيث الأشجار‏‎ ‎المتناثرة وفي المناطق شبه الصحراوية حيث أشجار السمر. في الأردن يتواجد في الأماكن الغنية بالشجيرات كالشمال والمناطق المطلة على الأغوار وضانا ومحمية فيفا.‏

ويعرف أيضاً فرخ السمن بالمرعاد لأن ذيله يرتعد ويهتز باستمرار. يتميز الذكر باللون الأسود الرمادي الذي يغطي ظهره، واللون الأسود الذي يغطي الرأس ومعظم الصدر تقريباً، والبطن أحمر برتقالي، والذيل ذو لون أحمر يتميز بأنه يرتعد ويهتز باستمرار وهو ما يميزه بالإضافة إلى لون الريش الجميل.

وليس من السهل التعرف على أنثى فرخ السمن ولكن على وجه العموم تكون الأنثى أدكن لوناً، ويخلط بينه وبين الحميراء الأوروبي. يتغذى على الحشرات وهو طائر وكذلك على الجنادب والصراصير.‏
