It is a shorebird breeds across northern Scandinavia and northern Asia and migrates south to the Mediterranean, the southern British Isles, France, tropical Africa, and tropical Asia for the winter. 

It is black in breeding plumage, and very pale in winter. It has a red legs and bill, and shows a white oval on the back in flight. Juveniles are grey-brown finely speckled white above, and have pale, finely barred underparts.  Feeds on small invertebrates. 

. In Jordan, observed in Aqaba Birds Observatory, some Dam’s lakes and Azraq wetland area.

خواض مائي كبير نسبيا يعيش على الشواطئ المائية يبلغ طوله 29-31 سم وعرض جناحية 61-67 سم. لون ريشه غامق بفترة التزاوج وباهت بالشتاء. لديه أرجل ومنقار أحمرين ويشاهد شكل بيضوي أبيض على منطقة الظهر أثناء الطيران. ‏

تتواجد في شمال المنطقة الإسكندنافية وآسيا وتهاجر بالشتاء إلى منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط ومناطق أفريقيا وآسيا الاستوائية. ‏

يتغذى كباقي أفراد فصيلة الخواضين باللافقاريات والخنافس والجنادب والذباب ويتناول طعامه إما عن سطح الأرض أو بالخوض بمنقاره بالماء والطين الطري.‏
