It is a small plover. Adults have a grey-brown back and wings, a white belly and a white breast with one black neckband. They have a brown cap, a white forehead, a black mask around the eyes with white above and a short dark bill. The legs are flesh-colored and the toes are all webbed. 

This species differs from the larger ringed plover in leg color, the head pattern, and the presence of a clear yellow eye-ring. Their breeding habitat is open gravel areas near freshwater, including gravel pits, islands and river edges in Eurasia and northwestern Africa. 

They nest on the ground on stones with little or no plant growth. Both males and females take turns incubating the eggs. They are migratory and winter in Africa. These birds forage for food on muddy areas, usually by sight. Size: Length 15–18 cm with wingspan 32–35 cm. They feed on Small invertebrates, insects, spiders, snails and worms.

قصيرة مقارنة بجسمه يميزه الطوق الأسود حول رقبته ومنقاره البرتقالي القصير ووجود حلقة صفراء اللون حول العين وتخف سماكة هذه الحلقة بالأنثى، وذلك في فصل الصيف أما في الشتاء فيخف اللون الأسود على جسمه ويكون المنقار أسود. لون جسمه من أعلى رملي وأسفله أبيض وأرجله برتقالية.‏

يعتبر طائر مهاجر شائع. يتوطن بالمناطق القريبة من المياه العذبة والبيئات قليلة الملوحة والسواحل. يتغذى على الحشرات والخنافس والنمل والديدان. تعشش عادة منفردة وأحيانا في مجموعات متباعدة على أرض طينية بها غطاء نباتي أو أحجار، تضع الأنثى بين 3-4 بيضات، تستمر فترة الحضانة بين 22-28 يوما ويتشارك الأبوان الحضانة. وعادة ما تغادر الأنثى قبل الصغار لتضع بيضا مرة أخرى أو للهجرة.‏

يتواجد بالأردن في مرصد طيور العقبة والتجمعات المائية في الصحراء الشرقية.‏‎ ‎
