Coots are rather small water birds that are members of the rail family. They are common in Europe and North America. Coot species that migrate do so at night. In Jordan, their habitat is in Azraq wetland reserve and Aqaba Bird’s Observatory.

They have predominantly black plumage, usually easy to see, often swimming in open water. Coots have prominent frontal shields or other decoration on the forehead, with red to dark red eyes and colored bills. They have long lobed toes that are well adapted to soft, uneven surfaces. Coots have strong legs and can walk and run vigorously. 

They tend to have short, rounded wings and are weak fliers, though northern species nevertheless can cover long distances. Coots are omnivorous, eating mainly plant material, but also small animals, fish and eggs.

دوري البحر الميت يسمى ايضا عصفور البحر الميت هو نوع من فصيلة الدوري يعيش كما يدل اسمه في منطقة البحر الميت وحوض نهر الأردن ويمكن تواجده حول البحر الاحمر والعراق وسوريا وإيران وغرب افغانستان وتقضي الشتاء في باكستان. ‏

طائر صغير طوله من 12-13سم الذكر لديه تاج رمادي الى بني والرقبة لها جوانب صفراء والاجزاء العلوية كستنائية مخططة والاجزاء السفلية بيضاء-رمادية والانثى تشبه عصفور المنازل والظهر بني والراس رمادي والاجزاء السفلية بيضاء وجوانب صفراء في الرقبة، اللون الأصفر يكون واضحا في فصل الربيع ويبهت قليلا لاحقا.

 يعشش في المناطق الجافة التي يسهل الوصول فيها للماء وتبني اعشاشها على الاشجار وتضع من 4-7 بيضات.‏
