The blackstart is 14 cm long with a wingspan of 23–27 cm and named for its black tail, which frequently fanned; the rest of its plumage is bluish-grey or grey-brown with darker wings and a black rump and tail. The belly and under-wings are greyish white; the bill and legs are black. The sexes are similar.
It is a species of rocky deserts and mountain slopes which nests in a rock crevice where it lays its 3–4 eggs. It feeds on insects, taken mainly on the ground. The blackstart is a confident species, unafraid of man. In Jordan, the species is only found in western parts of the country, in areas from the Jordan River valley south through the Dead Sea region to the Araba Valley and Aqaba Mountains.
يستوطن الوهاد الصخرية الضيقة والمنحدرات الحارة. ورغم كثرة أعداده إلا أن العين تخطئه بسبب ألوانه الرتيبة وصوته غير المحبب. ويتغذى هذا الطائر على الحشرات الموجودة في الأرض ويظهر عادة في أودية جبال ظفار رغم أنه آخذ في الانتشار في الصحاري الداخلية للمنطقة الجنوبية، وسيناء وفي الأردن في الصحاري الجنوبية والنقب ووادي نهر الأردن والبحر الميت.
طائر صغير يبلغ طوله 14 سم وعرض الجناحان من 23-27سم. أشتق اسمه من ذيله الأسود والذي يفتحه كالمروحة عند هبوطه وإقلاعه من الصخر. لون ريشه رمادي على أزرق أو بني ولون الجناحان أغمق من الجسم، المنقار والأرجل سوداء.
الذكر والأنثى متشابهان. يتغذى على الحشرات والتي يلتقطها بالعادة من الأرض. لا يخاف الإنسان ولكنه يبقى حذرا.
